Hi! So i'm new and i'm saving for a tank and everything for it and i was wondering if you guys could help me out with heater watts.

So the tank i'm getting is 24x24x24" and so that's 42uk gallons but then underneath i will be adding a sump which is 21x18" and holds 14uk gallons and i'll be putting the heater in the sump so i was wondering what wattage of a heater i should get and also whats the best place to buy a heater in the uk?

For redundancy, 2 heaters. Depending on how cool you keep your room temps I’d recommend either 2 150watt heaters or 1 100watt and the backup be 150watts. I have about 45gallons and I use a 100watt as a main and then 150watt as a backup. The 100watt comes on at 77.1 and the 150watt comes on at 76.8. A/C and heating in my house stays about 74 all year around.

My heater came from ReefKeeper, Bracknell. If you’re close by they are definitely worth a visit as they stock everything needed.

I run 2 heaters in my sump that are each underrated for my water volume. That way, if one gets stuck in the on position (which happens too often), it will take longer to have an effect on the system. Of course one heater and a temp controller is a safer option. I will be adding a controller soon. One more thing to plug in.

My house is pretty warm all year around so should i just invest in one type heater and maybe a cooler like a clip on fan or smth for the summer?

I would recomend saving for a heater controller to plug your heater into as well for extra safety....i use the D-D aquarium solutions heating and cooling controller myself...its a good quality piece of kit and a worthy investment for the safety of you livestock

You can keep it simple. Get yourself a titanium heater (300wt) with a built in probe, or a standard one and an inkbird monitor/controller which are reasonably priced and you are good. I have heater in sump. If no sump- tank install is fine.

I run duals also. I'm not so much worried about my tank over heating as much as temp drops, especially at night. My tank goes over 80, controllers shut the heaters off.

I keep my house at 69 in the summer and 72 in the winter, so my biggest fear is power outage and heater failure. Power outage number 1 as I know my lights and return pump handle most of my heating needs during the day. Night time outage is my biggest fear.

Buy yourself a couple of moving blankets (under $5 at Harbor Freight) and have those available to wrap the tank. It will insulate tank for a few hours. Then get yourself a 12 pack of foot warmers (hunters use these) and stick one on each side of tank under the moving blankets. The warmers last at least 12 hours. This will get you right by
