always used the steel stands, just built a new fish room and will be going the wood cabinet route. at lest 2 75's to start. what height is more popular? 30 or 36". I always had 30's but the 36 looks nice 30 for sitting or 36 for standing viewing?

The real question is, are you going to be standing or sitting in the fish room? I like 30, so that I can do maintenance without a ladder;)

36" would be my choice. You need ladder if your tank depth is more than 24" unless you are 6" higher than a six footer :D. I am an asian **** sapiens with decent height, I still need a chair to reach my tank bottom ;Smuggrin

Edit: the four stars thing was " h o m o" LOL

My current stand is 36" and the one I'm currently building is also going to be 36". I like this height but as said above it can be a struggle if the tank is high. I'm kind of short so even at 18" tall tank my sleeve gets soaked when cleaning the sand.

I feel you :D. I always spread a big used towel on the floor whenever I am working on my tank. Holding a mop with the other half looking like this  is no fun LOL

I got the imaginarium (Petco brand) stand for my 40b free from a friend. Not my first choice, but free is free.

It's, I think, 29.5" tall, which I like, because it is easier for my kids to see. But I had to make some serious measurements to get a skimmer under it. Because of the lower shelf height, I automatically lost 3-4 inches. Then I need space to remove the cup, so that's my hand width (small presidential hands) and the room necessary to take it off. I got a 18" tall skimmer, but alot of older models would only just fit, if at all.

Just something to think about. Height of the tank isn't the only consideration.

went to a local pets werehouse and saw both height cabinets. I really liked the 36" height. jury is still out tho

I was actually going to say 34". 30 gives you less room to work with.

When we designed our tank, the aesthetic we were looking for was "wall of glass" when you viewed it since it was being used a room divider. We ended up with a 36" steel stand and a 36" deep tank to match this vision. We had a lot of folks telling us - here and in person- we'd hate the 36" design and honestly, I love it and am pretty confident we will never get another "shallow" tank again. Sure it's a bit more challenging to place corals or do maintenance but nothing a good pair of tongs and some strategy can't overcome.

I will also mention - though it wasn't a factor for us since we had a basement sump - that having that much space under the stand is awesome. It's great to be able to go under the stand and sit there without breaking you're spine ;)

my stand is 36'' and tank is 30'' high . IT is look grate when standing in front.

I just had a 42" stand built for my 180 so I wouldnt have to bend down to look in...but my tank is only 24" tall, not 30+

Don't make the decision based on maintenance, get a ladder. It's your viewing pleasure that should be considered. I have a 36" stand with a 29.7" tall tank in the same room as a 30" stand. The 30" stand has my reef, I can view the corals on the sand bed sitting and it's still not a bad height for standing. The 36" stand has a fowlr, awesome for standing view, but you can not see the floor of the tank sitting. So if you were to be sitting in this room and the tank is a reef, I would suggest the 30" stand. Otherwise it's a real personal decision.

Im 5'6" and built my stand 34" tall with tank height 18". We sit on the couch 12' away and its perfect. For maintenance i have plenty of room underneath. For in tank maintenance the top is at my arm pit. However, when i look at my tank standing, i think its low. BUT I feel like the aesthetics of such a high stand to such a short tank wouldnt work if the stand was taller. It would dwarf the aquarium.

I got really lucky it worked out
