Hello & 180 Plumbing Puzzle

So, I have a new 180 that I’m going to turn into an SPS dominant tank and I’m thoroughly excited after not having a tank for 15 years or so. I have a few questions.

2 holes (1.5 inch and 1 inch) - sounds like I’m set for a durso out of the box unless I use those two as a herbie and snake the return on the outside of the tank right?

I haven’t quite made sense of the SCA “plumbing kit”. The return makes sense but it looks like I’m missing some reducers or something for the 1.5 drain right? Any ideas?

Any thoughts or ideas? I’m very interested to see the feasibility in turning this into a Herbie and routing the return outside of the tank and over the back but I’m not certain on whether or not that’s even a thing.

Its set up for a durso but a herbie is way better, just take the return over the side like you stated.

The 1" will do fine for the main overflow with the 1.5 being the emergency drain.The most important thing with a Herbie is using a GATE VALVE on the drain for fine control. There should be about 6" difference in the height of the main & emergency (higher).

Yes, that's what you should do. The smaller pipe should be the siphon, and the larger pipe should be the emergency. Then run the returns over the side or back.

You will need to purchase a 1" gate valve, probably online.

My tank was setup for a Durso and I turned it into a Herbie style with an over-the-rim return line. It is dead silent!

Thats the method I went with. Durso to a Herbie with return over the top.
