Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this great community!!! I’m sorry I’ve taken this long to introduce myself. My name is Allen Starling and I live in Georgia. I’m happily married and have three children who are mostly grown. I’ve been interested in this hobby for most of my life, but life has been too busy to enter into it. Life is still busy as I run my own HVAC company, but at least I have the money to dabble in it. Maybe if I win this billion dollar lottery I can jump in like Andrew Sandler, man what an inspiration!!! I picked up a great setup from another local, it is a IM Nuvo SR80 AIO with the stand and a Reef Breeders 48” light. So far I’ve obviously went through most of the newbie problems such as dinos which I defeated, now I’m winning the battle of green hair algae, but somehow I’ve gotten aptasia and bristleworms. I’ve been working all my problems out naturally so it’s a process. The aptasia seem to be winning despite my four peppermint shrimps attempts to eradicate them. I’m currently searching for a aptasia eating file fish. I’ve toyed with the idea of getting an arrow crab for the “Tremmors” as I call them, bristle worms, but I’m worried he’ll grab some of my fish. What day you on this subject? As most of you probably have went through this starting up you realized your maintenance regimen isn’t up to snuff as I have now noticed, but I like the challenge. The tank has been up and running since June of this past year. Most all of my corals and fish have survived. Sadly two Ignitus anthias and a cole tang have not made it. Oddly the second anthias to die I never found. I figured the CUC made quick work of it one night. So far I haven’t been too discouraged about it because that’s life right? Well like I said I appreciate being a part of this salty crew of scallywags and hope to learn more from all of you!!! God bless!!!

Hello and welcome to R2R. As for the bristleworms. I have no experience with arrow crabs or the worms but I do know that people consider them part of the clean up crew. However they can get quite large and unsightly. Also you don’t want to touch them with your bar hands!… as for the aptasia. Peppermint shrimp are great. Pick up two of them if you have a bunch. I’ve tried other methods to remove aptasia over the years, but usually it just makes them reproduce.

Welcome! Glad you joined. Sounds like you are well on your way!

Have you considered starting your build thread? I found its a great place to document my tank's evolution for myself. I started tank first then joined, so I'm still finding myself going back collecting pictures & updating historically as well as current state. Once you create your first post in your thread under Forum > Member Aquariums and link it to your account, they will give you build badge (look left, under my ID)

This might help you find people local to you in Temple Georgia:

This is a good reference book type online article I still review:

Welcome to R2R! Arrow Crabs are usually more trouble than they are worth. The best way to control bristle worms is to not let the sand bed/rocks get too dirty. They are great scavengers so it doesn't take much to keep them happy. If you have a lot of them, manually pluck them from time to time. For aptasia you may get lucky with peppermint shrimp or filefish or even better berghia nudibranchs but aptasia are hard to control. If they really take hold it will be just a long slow battle. I've tried lots of remedies over the years with varied success. Now I usually try to catch them when they first emerge and plug over them with reef epoxy.
