I have had a freshwater aquarium for years which housed african cichlids. I always wanted to do saltwater never wanted to pay the startup cost tho. Now I am really bored with the fish options in freshwater. I want to know if my setup I plan to go with is good for a FOWLR setup. I am not doing a sump due to space under my tank, plus the tank beign in the corner.

I have a 72 gallon Perfect Corner Tank

Setup

Protein Skimmer- AquaC Remora Protein Skimmer with Maxi-Jet 1200 Pump (going with HOB skimmer due to space)
Filter- Fluval 406 or FX6 (is the FX6 worth the extra cost in this case?)
Substrate- live sand 80LB
Rock- 40 pounds of dry live rock and 30 pounds of wet live rock (more wet live rock will be added as time goes on)
Circulation- Hydor Koralia Evolution Aquarium Circulation Pump 550-600
Lighting- regular T5 ocean sun bulbs
Heater- any recommendations?

Any advise with this will be greatly appreciated!

Refractometer
Reef Master Water Test Kit
I'd rethink the Remora, as its right on the border line for your tank. Maybe a Reef Octopus BH2000, better suited for your needs.
With that said, your list is sound. And you could use all Dry Rock, save some $$

Everything sounds good but I would refrain on using the canister filter. They will become nitrate factories if you don't clean them often. Protein skimmer, live rock and good circulation is all you need.

+1 to above advice and additional items. First off WELCOME to the R2R Forum. Might I suggest then that you up the Hydor Evo's to a pair of Evo 1050 gph, for a small added cost up front you will not regret the additional flow. Do you have a Fish stocking and/or wish list yet ???

Cheers, Todd

Hmmm no filter that will save me $350 hahaha, I will just add more circulation. Any live sand in particular you recommend?

Welcome. Agreed with the no canister and the upgrade to the Reef Octopus skimmer. You may want to get a small reactor or two for carbon and GFO.

The mandarin is going to be really hard without a sump. They for the most part only eat pods which need a safe place to grow out without any predictors. If you really want one you could get a hang on fuge and seed it with pods but you will have to let them grow for 6 months before you can put a mandarin in

Butterfly's are fragile. I would look at a bristle tooth tank or a Chevron tang. Even some calmer triggers. Look at wrasses they are nice and most will eat stuff like flatworms you don't want
