Hi,
I've had many fresh water tanks but not a single marine tank.
I saw one somewhere in an exhibition and I was more than amazed.
So I did my research & getting in touch with the basics.
But I guess it's still not enough knowledge to start a tank.
So I'm here to mostly get your guys help to get me through, & let me be a help if needed! :)
I live in Sri Lanka. (A small dot in Indian Ocean) Stuff here is very expensive & hard to find since only one or two shops dealing with marine tank stuff. That's a real discouragement.
But hey I've determined more than enough.

Welcome to reef 2 reef. I would plan a reef, my though is get everything in place for a reef but start with a fowler. Then if you decide to go full reef then you have everything with out extra expense.

Noted!
I had the same idea. I wanted to start with reef, going with FOWLR since it'd be disastrous if I fail.
Thank you!

Do your research on fish. If by any chance you get the coral bug, you want to make sure the fish won't make an expensive meal out of it. Also setup a quarantine tank. If things are expensive there, you will want to do things efficiently.
And welcome to R2R :)

It is a time thing. Once can do all the quick short cuts to start a reef, or be patient and wait. A reef tank really does not stop cycling for up to a year. My present system started doing well with corals about a year. In your research look at
  • Lighting (look for a light that will not just work but has great results)
  • filtration. Skimmer and sump are also very important
  • Flow can be add
  • Testing and chemistry. what salt and product am I going to use and how am I going to test it
These are a couple of area that will help in your research, and of course we are always here to help when you run into a road block :)

Patient has a big role in having a sustainable tank right!
I'll try to be patient!
And thank you very much for the info. And I thought flow had a bigger part in a reef tank. hmmp!
Yes, read, read & read that's what I'm determined to do for the next few months!

Welcome to R2R!

Thank you!!!

Welcome to R2r you picked a great place:)
Thanks, I want to be a part of it! :)

I found, each system is different, and a combination of flow, lighting, chem and skimming can be part of a successful reef. I am also putting reminders in my calendar to remind me not to forget simple maintains tasks;) forgetting cleaning really messes with things:)

Haha, tank takes a big chunk from the time.
Guess it all comes from the experience yeah? More failure today for a successful tomorrow!

A little late, but welcome to R2R. We've all made mistakes and the important thing is to learn from our own mistakes, and those of others. Read, read and read some more. It's a wonderful hobby so don't hesitate to jump in...once you're ready.

I'm really hyped and bummed at the same time because I know that I have to take it slow!

Welcome and think you're starting off with a good plan. You can never learn too much. Research and steady work leads to a beautiful reef.
