So I've recently relapsed and am back to setting up a reef tank. I had one a few years ago but made an unwise purchase at a big box pet company store that killed my system. I broke it down, sold it and swore never again. But... Here I am :)
I never lost my appreciation or respect for the hobby and when a guy at work was asking me questions about what was happening in his setup it got my wheels turning. Then, he practically gave me a tank, heater, filter, live rock and light to get started. A week later I have a nano starting on its nitrogen balance.
20 gal high
25lbs live aragonite, DSB about 2 1/2 in
40lbs aragonite live rock
T5 24w 1x 10000K 1x420nm
6 small blue leg hermits
To get the balance going I've been sinking reef flake under pebbles so the hermits can get it before the filter does. I've also dosed SMALL amounts of phytoplankton, normal of stress-zyme and heavy on the Nite-out II nitrifying bacteria solution.

Any and all comments and suggestions are always welcome. BIG thanks to Jhoffa92 for getting me back into this awesome hobby.

Wow... Sorry if there is any misinterpretation to my use of relapse... I'm referring to my addiction to saltwater creatures not anything else. Hope I did not offend.

Welcome to Reef 2 Reef. Maybe weigh down a piece of seaweed for the hermits instead?

Thanks mike! Until today it was just 1 blue leg who was pretty content with the flake under a rock. It's 6 of them now and I'm not sure if the sunken flakes are going to cut it for long. Is there a certain brand of nori you recommend? Or a blend that is good for tanks at the beginning of their seeding stage? It may sound crazy but I've been picking full green flakes out of the reef flake w garlic mix I got and weighing them down with pebbles so the guy can get to it.
