I am just planning my return to the reef world! In the past I work my way through 60 gallon, 90 gallon and 300 gallon tanks. After the 300 gallon failed and I was travelling frequently, I sold virtually eveything. I am now retired, at least partially, and decided to plan a new tank and familirize myself with the latest approaches, methods and technology (I see few discussions on DSB and plenums now!).
My new tank will be a 4-5 ft peninsula - options being considered are RS, Waterbox and a custom build. The fish room I had for my 300 gallon has been reduced in size (for me anyway!) so I will have a primary undertank sump. The fish room (with water, floor drain and three dedicated 15 amp circuits) will primarily be for ATO water and AWC water; if any room is available in the room I might have a secondary sump (UV, reactors, ATS maybe) or a shallow frag tank - but that is a decision for later.
The major changes I have seen on my return are - much higher costs, filter rollers, more chemical addition options, and minimal real live rock. My 300 gallon was managed by an older APEX and only my LED lights (first generation) had a built in controller; now there are controllers for mosts unit via apps - I will try to design my system to limit the different apps and probably with APEX.
I should have my custom tank/sump/stand quotation in a few days and then I must start spending money!
