I am just planning my return to the reef world! In the past I work my way through 60 gallon, 90 gallon and 300 gallon tanks. After the 300 gallon failed and I was travelling frequently, I sold virtually eveything. I am now retired, at least partially, and decided to plan a new tank and familirize myself with the latest approaches, methods and technology (I see few discussions on DSB and plenums now!).

My new tank will be a 4-5 ft peninsula - options being considered are RS, Waterbox and a custom build. The fish room I had for my 300 gallon has been reduced in size (for me anyway!) so I will have a primary undertank sump. The fish room (with water, floor drain and three dedicated 15 amp circuits) will primarily be for ATO water and AWC water; if any room is available in the room I might have a secondary sump (UV, reactors, ATS maybe) or a shallow frag tank - but that is a decision for later.

The major changes I have seen on my return are - much higher costs, filter rollers, more chemical addition options, and minimal real live rock. My 300 gallon was managed by an older APEX and only my LED lights (first generation) had a built in controller; now there are controllers for mosts unit via apps - I will try to design my system to limit the different apps and probably with APEX.

I should have my custom tank/sump/stand quotation in a few days and then I must start spending money!

I am aware of the problems with earlier tanks from RS. The G2 is supposed to be better but do I want to find out in two years?

Some Waterbox versions have a non opening panel on the stand which is naturally in the wrong place for my layout!

I am hoping the custom quotation is acceptable...

Hello fellow Canadian and welcome back to reefing .

A lot has changed . The biggest things appear to be prices and as you mentioned live rock .
Luckily I still have the same 400lbs of rocks I started with in the late 90’s
Livestock prices are a lot different if we compare from when I first started .

when you’re ready for corals .
I’ve been wanting to order from new dawn aquaculture but was waiting for someone a little closer to try them first .

Happy reefing

HI, I still have probably 50lbs of rock that has been used as a garden decoration. I will clean before winter!

In between builds and working up to the current 230
I had 6 styrofoam shipping boxes in storage
Filled with rocks .
Even with this system running I still have 2 boxes I’m not ready to part with
