Hi! I'm new to the world of saltwater. I've been actually reading up on it for about 4 years now but havn't actually cycled a tank yet. My husband is in the Army so although I've wanted a tank I never wanted to have to find homes for all the little critters when we moved but after the move up here in March I just can't take it anymore. I decided to start a very small tank, the jbj 3 gal. I know it will be harder to keep on top of things. I know it's not really recommended for beginers but I'm prepared to test often, do weekly water changes and I'm getting an ato to deal with the evaporation. The tank isn't actually started yet but it's getting close.

So far I have:
JBJ 3 gal.
AC 70
hydor theo 50w heater (although I'm wondering if this is too much for such a little tank, might have to use it in my mix bucket)
refractometer
oceanmaster test kit
potable water safe bucket (for mixing my saltwater)
a powerhead (for mixing saltwater, it's way to big for the tank itself)
On order:
Ledtric full spectrum light
a media basket for the ac 70
red sea coral pro salt

I need to get another heater either for my mix bucket or a lower wattage one for the tank. I'm also going to be either ordering or rigging an ato. I have to get a fixture for the bulb. I know I'm forgetting something here but it's hard to type/think at the moment because my 5 year old keeps asking for help on her computer game.......I'm going to be mixing my saltwater with distilled water until I get a RO/DI. I figure between my tank and each of the kids have little fresh water tanks it will eventually pay for itself. So anyhow soon I will be able to get sand/rock/water in the tank.

The only thing I really really want in the tank is a pom-pom crab. Actually there's tons of stuff I want but they are all just to darn big. I'm going to get the live rock and hope for some neat things to pop out and then go from there I guess.

Hello! Welcome. Sounds like your going to have a cute little mini garden. Pom Pom crabs are cute!

Hi there!! Welcome to R2R!! Lookin' forward to seeing how your tank comes along!

Hi Ayllie and welcome to r2r. Let me start off by saying you are a Brave soul. I would not have fine with smudging smaller than a12g but I'm sure you will be upgrading soon, once the saltwater virus status spreading lol.i would recommend getting a skimmer, maybe a tunze 9002 & I would definitely advise on getting auto dosers for 2 part as that will help you remain stable. Brs sells some that are great. Lastly if you are getting an ato, I would recommend the tunze osmolator as it is the smallest and safest ato you will find.

Glad to have you on board and I wish you the best.

On a 3-gallon pico aquarium, these are way overkill. You can do much better with simple water changes, which she said will be done weekly. It sounds like she's done her homework to me.

Welcome, Ayllie.
