SLUUUURRRPP! That’s the sound of me being sucked back in once again. I’m an old soul reefer from back in the 70’s and 80’s. Then life happened. Went from a young free surfer/diver/reefer to “Married with children”. Mortgages, braces, car payments, this’s and that’s and the tanks went into storage. If you’ve been there you know what I’m talking about. But now the kids are grown, out of college and out on their own. With no more kids in the house or college tuition to pay, it means a bit more “mad money” to do what I want with.

So, I’m back in this maddening hobby. (Why do I do this to myself?) Oh yeah, because I love the ocean! Back in the day I have had an assortment of tanks with old school equipment. Fish only, Reef (or what passed for reefs back then), even a cold-water tank that I stocked myself from diving. (Ever have your own lobster tank at home? Great for having friends over for dinner.) Starting up again can be a real eye opener with all of the advancements and new toys to play with. (I’m such an engineering geek.)

Since I can’t help but to keep adding critters I went with a fairly large setup this time around, 130 something gallon display tank (cube) on top with a 120 something gallon sump/refugium below. LED lights on both display and refugium, controlled by Apex, Seneye monitor, running Triton system. I started collecting my tanks and equipment about five years ago but now finally have it up and running. Yeah, I’m slow, but that’s a good thing in this hobby, right? So far, with the help of R2R and the internet everything has been running fairly smoothly.

So that’s me in a (huge) nutshell. I do have one question about a piece of equipment but I’ll save that for another thread.

Welcome to R2R!!

Welcome @Reefer Reboot to R2R and back into the hobby. I'm in a similar position as far as kids.....just be warned....they move back in....we now have our 36 year old back! I'd recommend starting a Member's Tank thread to document your build....and include pictures. Again, welcome.

Welcome back to it and welcome to R2R, Mr. Reefer from the O.C.!

I started collecting “tank stuff” again five years ago because someone was selling a new-in-box Reef Octopus Classic 202S skimmer for about $200 on eBay. I then pulled out my old legacy wet/dry filter from a back corner of the garage and started getting sentimental before I tossed it back into the pile.

I always enjoy reading what was classified as a reef setup from 20+ years ago, with my bio-balls and air stone-powered skimmer. So I look forward to what you see as major advances in equipment and technique as you begin to post and share.

Congrats on reaching what I regard as a great stage in life. I’m not there, yet. I’ve got two high schoolers talking Ivy League or Stanford, so I probably have no business building a reef tank just yet!

Thanks to one and all. I have uploaded my question regarding my Seneye color graph in the Reef Aquarium Discussion forum so if anyone has any input I would love to hear it. Thanks again.

Welcome back to the salt life !

Have you checked out your local reef club up there? (I’m south of ya, Sd)
It’s a VERY active club.
