Hello! I've been a lurker for many years, mostly researching for my husband who had a nano tank and now a 40 gallon Red Sea tank. When our nano tank sprung a leak last year, we set up a 10 gallon holding tank for a few months until we got the new tank set up. Now I'm using that tank as a hospital, pod growing and frag tank. Earlier this year in the Red Sea tank we battled what we thought was cyanobacteria but after three treatments (chemi-clean?) learned we had dino/diatoms. We lost most of the coral except the hardiest species which was SO disappointing. After blackouts, endless sand vacuuming, water changes, dosing of good bacteria, NO3 monitoring, peroxide, séances, and drum circles we have those little buggers under control. I can still see them when I put a sample under the microscope but they are being kept in check by a more diverse sandbed ecosystem. For awhile it seemed like the sand was poisonous and anything on the sand would sicken. I took out several acans that were receding and showing too much skeleton and put them in the hospital and they perked up by the next day. I wish we had taken things out earlier. Anyhow- now I want to try my hand a fragging so I've converted the hospital tank to a multip-purpose tank- I have a basket full of macroalgea and a good pod population, a tray for frags and places for items that need watching. I have a few questions which I will post on the right forums. Thanks for all your contributions. This is an amazing resource! Kirsten

WELCOME, KIRSTEN!!! Happy you were able to tackle your struggle with dinos. The challenges of reef keeping can be daunting but so rewarding when overcome. Looking forward to your continued participation. Let's see some photos of the fruits of your success!
