Hey everyone,
My name is Wes, currently in Bozeman, MT and working with a 29 gal. long tank which was started Dec. 9, 2011.
As a kid I had fish, but who didn't right, but it wasn't until last summer that I began turning it into a hobby. Found a 10 gallon tank at a yard sale, and started a small freshwater fish tank. It was a fish tank, but it wasn't a hobby, there wasn't enough to do. So then I found myself a 29 gallon tank on craigslist and began running a larger freshwater operation in which I began breeding different types of Mollies and raising the fry in my 10 gallon tank.
When I was beginning to get a few different batches of Molly fry I decided I needed a place for them to go. It was shortly after that I found the local saltwater aquarium store. A couple weeks later, while searching for a part-time job, I walked into the store on a whim and to make a long story short and spare the details am now both working and learning the hobby while slowly building and supporting my tank.
As a brief history of key points I...
Dec. 9, 2011 - added live sand, live rock and saltwater to my empty 29 gallon tank
Jan. 5, 2012 - returned from winter break, added some more live rock and rearranged things for about the 3rd/4th time, and added my "cleaning crew"
Jan. 14, 2012 - added my first fish (1 Bicolor Dottyback, 1 Yellowtail Damsel, 1 Peppermint Shrimp), did not pick these fish myself, but under the recommendation that these would be good starter fish as they are inexpensive and told hardier than other marine fish
Feb. 4, 2012 - removed my Bicolor (the only thing left living) and began adding fish that I actually wanted. "Mated" my own pair of Clownfish after we got in a large shipment of only different types of Clownfish as I was told you could by taking the largest from one tank and smallest from the other of the same species
Mar. 23, 2012 - added a set of borrowed 24†Coralife Compact Fluorescents after finally figuring out that my lights I had were doing nothing and that my tank could be that much more awesome with better lights (thought I still need to upgrade and find my own set)
May 8, 2012 - bought a pair of 4†R2 Moonlight LED’s from a friend in town to again try to add a little more life and health to my aquarium
Currently I am running:
"piggy-back" filter
240gph Powerhead
An adjustable temp. heater
24" Coralife Compact Fluorescent lighting
2, 4†R2 Moonlight LED lighting
And my aquarium is home to:
1 - Black and White Ocellaris Clownfish
1 - Ocellaris Clownfish
1 - Green Mandarin Dragonet
1 - Hector's Goby
1 - Six Line Wrasse
1 - Blue/Green Reef Chromis
1 - Black, Long spine Urchin
1 - Trapezia Pocillopora/Acropora Crab
1 - Decorator Arrow Crab
2 - Peppermint Shrimp
2 - Tonga Nassarius Snails
3 - Bumble Bee Snails
4 - Turbo Snails
4 - Cerith Snails
6 - Hermit Crabs
1 - Nerite Snail
1 - Pulsing Xenia cluster
1 - Pulsing Xenia and Palm Tree Xenia (?) cluster
1 - Ricordea Mushroom
1 - Bulls Eye Mushroom
1 - Spotted Mushroom
2 - Green Striped Mushrooms
3 - Red Mushrooms
2 - Birdsnest SPS Coral (frags)
7 - Kenya Tree Coral (varying sizes)
I keep an up to date, almost day-to-day log of all things done to my aquarium, aquarium observations and facts and information picked up from various people and places along the way. I also keep an up to date log of every creature that is currently in or has passed through my aquarium.
My next challenge I hope to take on at some point, as I do enjoy my hobbies off the side of my hobby, is breeding and raising either Clownfish or Mandarin fry. I have done some reading on both subjects and know that I am not quite ready for such a task given my small set-up and only being about to slowly update systems here and there, but if the opportunity is presented, aka my Clownfish lay eggs or I find a male companion for my female Green Mandarin Dragonet, I can't wait to take a swing at it.
In addition to (and lately hand-in-hand with) my saltwater aquarium hobby I am a big fan of photography and have enjoyed using my new macro lens to capture my saltwater tank and its residents. But for starters, here's just a look at the tank as a whole.
Also, I have never messed with a blog or forum or anything and so I AM interested in this lighting contest, and hope that this is what I needed to do to enter it???
