Hi all, I have been following this forum on facebook for sometime and I finally decided to jump on board. A little about myself first, my name is Matt, I'm 18 and live in Fort Worth. I fund my reef addiction by making pizzas at Dominos.
I started my first fish tank when i was 12 I think. I was hanging out at a creek by my house with some friends when I caught a little mud colored fish. I knew I had an old dusty little fish tank in my garage so I took him home. After cleaning that tank out and mowing my lawn to earn money to go to Petco to buy a HOB filter, and having nothing for decor besides a plastic cup with rocks to weigh it down, I had my first setup!
Fast forward 6 years and I have kept every type of freshwater tank imaginable! Recently, I would say 4 or 5 months ago, I became interested in saltwater tanks. Nano-reefs to be specific. I did my research and at first was overwhelmed and a bit intimidated by the loads of different information available. Some people encouraging people to dive into the hobby, trying to make it sound doable. Some people trying to.. glorify or over complicate it.. so they can feel smarter or something I don't know. Fighting through the discouragement I have found that it is as simple or complicated as you make it. The only real difference, in my opinion, in maintaining a reef tank as opposed to a fresh tank is you have to top off evaporated water every day in the reef. (and the cost of the corals of course lol)
Anyway, three months ago I started my first reef tank! Now I have several corals and a pair of clowns. I have to say I am in love with reef keeping! It is so much more rewarding than freshwater and there is so much more going on. I love all the little critters that you can barely see. All the hitchhikers. The clean up crew. Its all just awesome to watch! I would have to say that my favorite part of this hobby is how much you are constantly learning.
Currently I keep my reef tank, a 50 gallon cichlid tank, and a 20 gallon planted tank.
I hope this is a good introductory bio. I look forward to reefing among all of you!
