Justin, and I am a reefer. But I'm not addicted to it. I can quit any time I want. No, I really can!
Anyway I'mout here in Utah, just a few miles south of the Great Salt Lake. I've been in this habit,er, hobby for about 2 years now. I have a 30 breeder with no sump or skimmer, PC lighting (soon to get on the LED bandwagon!). One clown, one chalk basslet and a yellow watchman goby. Plus various CUC members. A few softies and a LPS. One benefit of living close to the lake is that there is an area in which Lake Bonneville Tufa Rock (google it) can be found and used in a reef. It looks just like fiji rock and is completely inert. Also the sand in the area is oolitic and clean. Many locals use it in their tanks without any problems. Plus its free! Makes good base rock.
Reef2Reef seems friendly and inviting. I'm looking forward to getting and giving helpful info!

Welcome. Just remember admiting you have a problem is the first step in embracing it...........LOL

Justin, Welcome to R2R! :welcome: You should start a build thread and please share some pics of your tank.

This is the island that locals collect tufa rock and oolitic sand. All but 3 of the rocks are the tufa rock.

Welcome to R2R! Nice setup. Wish I had a place to get rock like that...lol

Thanks! BLM allows a person to harvest 200lbs at a time. Its very poreous and light. If you pressure wash it, it really opens up and looks prety good. The sand (which I'm not currently using) is very white and looks really good as well. The rock does make start up cheap! I started with about 5lbs of fiji live rock and the rest is the tufa rock. The hard part about getting the rock is you need an off road capable vehicle and good directions for collecting. Its fairly picked over these days until someone finds a new vein!

Welcome Justin!!!! I love your tank!! I am also using tufa rock, from a local LFS. It would be sweet to be able to get it free!!!
