Hello,
Can anybody tell me what type of gone this is? And what you believe would be the best placement? I have a 25 gallon Waterbox mini pen. Currently I have it on a frag rack in a pretty high flow area and it seems happy. Any information at all is very appreciated.

thank you

How much is extending?

gonis like to sway with the current not get beat up by it?

it looks like a red Goni.
It’s not extending very much, maybe a quarter of an inch, or barely any extension, mainly at night. Thank you for the comments. Usually a see deep red goni and this one being more pinkish, I fell for it instantly. Based off the tank pic, any placement recommendations?

I give mine high flow and medium light; think yours is well placed. Ialso have pinkish ones along with a yellow.
Hosting a clown goby, lol

All 8 of mine are in indirect flow high light.

How long has it been in your tank?

I would think if it has been a few days and you don’t see much extension (did you pick it up at an LFS? Was it extended more?) I would move it to a lower flow area.

where you have it would probably be good for lighting

Aminos have been the key for mine. Mid light mid alternating flow

Thank you so much for all the info everyone. Yes I just picked it up and it’s only been like 2 days. I appreciate everyone’s info. This community is great.

I can’t wait till mine grow up! Yours are so pretty!
Thanks man they are definitely my favorite corals, I always seem to have at least 1 in all of my tanks going way back. Check out Bernardpora if you want a crazy fast growing “Goni” type. They encrust like a Monty and make the rock or whatever “fluffy” in the flow with Insane colors. Both of mine where sold as short tentacle Goni a while ago but turns out they where Bernards. Side note they will sting Aggressively ( not each other) and they have some crazy reach.

I just got one of those! And I instantly fell in love lol. And it was sold as a micro Goni but I already knew it was something else

That looks like Goniopora stutchburyi.

The the OP your going to have to play with it. Also give it some time, sometimes when I get a new one it takes several days especially if they were freshly cut and maybe did not have time to settle in.. Your looks that way. With the popularity of these corals places are bringing in wild colonies and chopping them up and just sending them out. Allot of the gonies are very sensitive to being cut and why have them die in their tanks. I can frag one of my colonies and 3 frags do really well and 2 just die all cut the same all siting next to each other.

They are all different to in the way they look. Not all get long polyps some are just shorter or smaller polyps.

Opening at night tells me it may be a lighting issue and it is getting to much light. A coral when it is getting more light than it is used to sometime will shrink up to decrease surface are so it takes on less light. When you get a coral you do not give it automatically the amount of light it likes you give it was it was kept in erroring to the low side so it does not bleach. You can slowly increase. A coral spends allot of time being shipped and being at the wholesaler where it may have no light to garbage light. Then the retailer where you got it may not have the best lighting either so it may have adapted to lower light levels.

Just because someone has had success and say well look this is how I keep mine it may be a different species. Goniopora are a diverse group and come from all different conditions from light, flow to even nutrients. You have to find what works best for yours.

Op, live everyone’s Goni’s. I turned the flow down on my Nero 3 to 30% and the goni seemed to extend more. I believe it’s more acclimated to the tank. And I can’t wait until it the size of some of the other goni’s presented in this thread. Sometimes I see them on an island(rock) in a tank on bottom. What do y’all think of this placement method? Thank you to everyone.

That works.
I’ve seen a lot of pictures where they are on the sand bed. I’ve read though sand can irritate them, so I believe it’s a good idea to place them on a rock or frag disk to help keep the sand off of them
