Hello all, Newb here, and new to sw. For those exp ppl please check out my thread. I have been doing copious amounts of research and planned most of the mechanical parts down to the brand. We are retired and on a budget, so the build will be slow going, buying a few pieces a month, but hope to start it off correctly so that once it's going I will need minimal upgrades or changes. Hope to see you on my thread, and I might stalk yours.

Welcome!! Since you are going to go slow with your build, take your downtime and ask LOTS of questions!! Hopefully we can stear you away from many of the common mistakes made by new reefers!
That is the plan. I do have a thread up about the details of the set up I would like and really hope a few ppl read through it and give input. I can't ask questions if I don't know there is a mistake. From that thread each month I plan to post my progress, and ofc ask questions if I get tripped up. My big questions will come in about 6 months when I'm ready to add my first corals. The are all sooooo pretty and there are so many to choose from that I don't want to get the wrong ones at the wrong stage of the tank development lol.

I should mention my build items list is on a separate thread under one of the tank forums. IDK how to direct ppl to it other than if they click my info it can be found at I only have the 2 threads.

Welcome home, you will love it here!

Keep us posted with your build with many photos :)
Thanks, and I have been cruising forums and reading product scripts and reviews for 2 weeks now. I think I have a pretty good picture of the build from the hours and days and more hours of research, but feed back is always good.

meant to mention r2r has been the forum I've got the most insight from, and confirmed by at least three other sources, so figured a week out from the first parts purchase was a good time to join and share the proposed components for review.

So I guess it's story time and how we came to wanting a reef tank, and there will be a moral at the end of it.

We were renting a small place in another state where we had a little 36 gallon freshwater. It did not survive the move to TX. Now we have our own place and have been here 2 years so we started discussing a new tank.

We have a very long hallway that is dead space. Portland had a 60 gallon tank with stand on sale for $200. I thought let's check it out, it would go great in that space as a freshwater.

Next thing you know we are in the store and she sees the 125 gallon tank and says I don't want the little tank, I want the big one. I try to explain to her once you get over 75 gallons you really start looking at sw setups and they cost more.

Well she would hear none of it. So I started showing her pics of the various saltwater tanks (f/o, field, reefs) again she said I want that one! That sent me on my set up research quest. Luckily I am a retiree so in about 2 weeks of non stop research I have a good concept of the set up and the cost associated with it (mind you I am only referring to the equipment at this stage). Showed her the cost and we have worked out a 4 to 5 month budget to get all the equipment. That brings me to this point.

At this time I do want to thank r2r members for great posts. This site has been the base for most of my research, and I checked the info here for everything against 3 other sources, to come up with my plan.

So I promised a moral and here it is: Gentlemen when the ladies are telling you size doesn't matter on tanks, it's a lie. The proof is when mine told me she wanted the bigger tank!
