Hi there, welcome to R2R. I'm also an expat in Japan (Yokohama) and started reefing approximately 1 year ago. I have poor Japanese communication and I rarely find someone at the shops that speaks any English.
But luckily was able to find a shop with some very knowledgeable guys and I would usually bring someone to help me with the translation there.
I didn't find any nice events yet, besides in the LFS where someone from Red Sea would go to talk about their equipment.
One recommendation I would give is to always have some towels near your tank, because at any moment an earthquake can spill salt water on your floor.
