Greetings Reef2Reef members (and lurkers)!
I'm planning on getting back into the hobby at some point in 2018, and I'm starting to plan out my build.
I took some ... time off in 2017 after moving my 125 gallon tank. It was the 2nd move in 2 years, but my wife and I had finally bought a place and so the tank was getting moved to its final home. However, just a month after we moved in, my Apex leak detectors summoned me home to find that the tank had a large crack down the front. About 40-50 gallons of water had already leaked out by the time I got home.
We were just starting lots of renovation work and neither my wife nor I had the mental stamina to try to set up temporary fish housing while trying to quickly get a new tank running. Also I was worried that I wouldn't be able to care for them all properly with such an approach, so I put out a FREE FISH/CORAL post on the local forums and managed to re-home all the fish and coral that evening. I think that approach gave all the life in the aquarium the best chance at survival (much of which I thought of as a friends - I'd had all the fish 3+ years).
The tank was perfectly level, so I think it got bumped and acquired a micro-fracture during the move that eventually became the tank-ending leak.
I've hung on to some gear (MP-40s, Radions, Tunze ATO, some Apex stuff) so the new tank setup won't require as many decisions as the first tank. I am planning on something substantially smaller this time to cut down on the space required for water change gear, dosing containers, etc.
While I slowly plan my build out I'm living vicariously through all of you with established tanks. It took me many months to be able to look at anything reef related online without my heart breaking all over again - but slowly the pain has receded and I'm once again enjoying aspects of the hobby.
