Hello All.
Starting up my very first tank. Brother in law talked me into giving this a try. My tank is 150 G 60". Just got sump finished so hopefully will have water circulating this weekend. NO idea what I'm getting myself into. BIL sent me a list of stuff I need and now have it all ready to go except for reef lightning. Any tips are gladly accepted and appreciated.

Thanks for the welcome. First question, I have 180 lbs of dry rock from Billy's, how much should I use? It's a 60" X 24" 150 gallon tank. I have 180 lbs of Hawaiian Black substrate. Also, any tips on designing rock layout?

For lighting, any idea what you'd like to go with? LED, T5, Metal Halide? Depended on the route you want to go, i'd recommend a LED T5 hybrid

BIL is recommending 3 AI Hydra 26 HD's. I personally have no idea. He has Reef Breeder Photon V2. I was looking at some cheaper options to start but I imagine this is like anything else....you get what you pay for. I went into a fish shop here and he had kessil 360W's setup. The "shimmer" was awesome. BIL no likey the Kessil so that's all I really have to go on.

Honestly, I feel a bit overwhelmed. I rushed into it out of excitement and bought everything I saw trying to get going. Going to try to take my time. I have no idea how to even cycle tank. just making RODI water now.

I agree. Its a good idea to spend the money now, instead of spending more money in the long run by buying a cheaper setup now just to buy the expensive later. Me personally I'm a HUGE kessil fan and would recommend them to anybody that asks. The shimmer, color blending, and ease of use are unmatched in my eyes.

Simplicity is probably the most important thing for me. I do want to be able to grow coral of different kinds. What's benefit of T5 hybrid over LED? Seems like there's SOOOO much on lighting out there hard to decide

BIL bashed them but I know what I saw in person look awesome to me. I've read about the Kessil 700 but haven't seen them. No idea on coverage and if shimmer is same as the 360WE Tuna Blues I saw in person. I was thinking 3 Kessil 360W's would cover me.
