My wife and I was into the reef & fish hobby for several but gave it up back in 2001. I built a 75 gallon reef above the TV in the living room, with access in the third bedroom behind the tank, so all of the system was hidden. I made all the lighting and filtration systems and mixed my own chemicals. I made the light hood (which held four VHO bulbs) with a pulley system that would raise & lower for tank maintenance. We had many soft and stony corals & fish. The tank being in the wall was a joy to view while watching TV. We also had a 40 gallon clam tank, 40 gallon mushroom and a 200 gallon fish tank. We sold most every thing because we raced 360 winged sprint cars and for other hobbies. Like a lot of you, I could talk all day about the salt water hobby and story's about this beautiful and fantastic hobby. I loved teaching children and adults about the coral reef ecosystems all over the world and what we need to do to protect them all. I'm so,ooo happy that there are so many business's and hobbyists that have successfully got into fish & coral breeding, so that we're not diminishing the reefs of fish, corals & live rock ! I'm now wanting to get back into the hobby and do some breeding for myself and others. I know many things have changed since dropping the hobby several years ago, so I'll have to do some research and will have many questions for you salt water freaks ! I must admit, I wish we had never gave up the hobby !!!

Hello, I joined this wonderful site to get back into the beautiful reef hobby ! As a two year old, I was running through the kitchen (which mama always said not to) lol, and fell head first onto the corner of the refrigerator, cracking my skull. I was in a coma for 4 days and have brain damage. It affects my short & long term memory, but the worse is I have a bad headache, to migraine and much worse, where I drink a dose of morphine into water, coffee etc. I'm 51 and had to give up working in my 20's. I also broke my neck and have three vertebrae fused, which also brings pain. . I'm diabetic, had 3 recent consecutive winter years of pneumonia which depleted 1/4 of my lung capacity, then I had a root canal on a tooth which became infected, it traveled to my bladder, to my kidneys, liver, then entered my bloodstream. It's called "septic blood" which means my entire body became infected. At the time, the specialist doctor said I would have only had three days to live if I hadn't gone to the hospital. I was there for 4 days and wasn't getting much better, so they flew me to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota where they hooked me up to a kind of dialysis machine to clean my blood, organs and tissues. I spent 16 days in the ICU and another 21 in a private room. Now that I'm back to good health, I want to get back into my favorite hobby of reef keeping and also to return to our small towns school with teaching our young to respect our reefs around the world. We had a hermit crab named, "Hermie" that I would bring with me and place him on a table to let the children watch him. I also brought my camcorder movies of the 75 gallon reef that I built into the living room wall above the TV, with access to a third bedroom which was our fish room. I made my hood lighting system and added a pulley system so I could raise it to get in the tank easier and still have great lighting (which started out with 4 VHO's then added a 250w halide for the stony corals), plumbing, dosers, etc. that I made myself, and would mix my own calcium chloride and other chemicals. Anyway, I actually got depressed having to give up all 4 tanks, but I couldn't let all the corals die due to slowing down on the maintenance, and now I want to get back into it slowly, so this set-up would be,..... great. I'm not writing this for people to feel sorry for me, as there's many,....people that have life a lot worse than me. It's just that being home most of the time I need a hobby that inspirer's me and makes me happy, and other than my beautiful wife, there's nothing more beautiful than the coral reefs and reef fish ! Thank you, Kevin

My post above was meant to be in the contest page, not here. I don't see a way of canceling it ? Sorry !
