Hello all.
I have had tropical fish in the past and after a break of several years I am getting back into the hobby. I am new to reef tank systems and all the new equipment available but I am learning and started putting together a system around March 05, 2014.
My equipment consists of a 90 gal custom rimless tank with 2 Current Marine LED Pro, a Vortech MP 10 W/ES propeller pump, RS 100 sump, NW 150 Reef Octopus Protein Skimmer, Triton Pump 4 Dual, 40 pound Live Aragonite pink sand and 60 pounds mixed Kaelini and Electron Slab live Rock. I also set up an R/O system to keep the tank topped off.
Living in Florida, I have the advantage of being 5 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and have filled my tank with water from there. I am also installing a 165-gallon holding tank to fill and keep the water on hand. I plan to do a 5% water change weekly.
Contrary to a lot of advice, I started my cycling of the tank with livestock and it has been very successful. I had mushrooms already on the live rock and put 2 Bangaii Cardinals(tank raised), 2 Aqua Ocellaris, 4 Green Chromis, clove polyp, green polyp, 10 Mexican Turbo snails, 16 Atlantic Blue Leg hermit crabs, and a Rose Tip Anemone. After two weeks I added a Royal Gramma and a Rock Anemone Caribbean.
So far I have done two water changes and tested after each. The SG is 1.026 with Nitrate dropping from an initial 5 to 0, Calcium averaging 400-420 with Kalkwasser system set up and ready to be added if needed, KH is 9 and PO is at 0.25 rising from an initial 0 but I am watching that closely.
With that said I am glad to be on the Forum. I have already researched and receive great advice from comments on issues posed. There is a great knowledge base on this Forum. I am looking forward to any comments or advice.
