So, an introduction, my name is Ken and live in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am starting up my first saltwater tank soon. A Coworker has a reef tank at home and set up a nano tank with live rock in our office and I am hooked. I have a 75 gallon tank which was drilled for a Synergy Reef overflow. I've been reading different forums trying to get as much info as possible and have been reading some threads here. I am still waiting on a few parts to put the tank together. So far I have

Bashea 24"x10"x14" Biofuge sump
Synergy Reef Shadow overflow
Tunze 1073.o2 return pump
2 - Hydor Koralia 850 gph power heads
Aqueon 200 watt heater

The light that came with the tank is an LED which will be fine for the meantime but once I get established and get some soft corals I will upgrade.

Going to do Live Rock, Fish and some soft corals eventually.

So, I was going to get dry rock to start a base and then live rock and cycle for a month or so. I have found the answer to a lot of questions reading threads and I am sure i'll be asking more in the future.

I'll start off with how many pounds of live rock would be good to start with on a 75 gallon tank?

Welcome!

I have about one pound per gallon (around 260 total pounds) and it works really well with the bio filter. Just be sure there is good water flow throughout your tank. I have a channel behind my rocks with a powerhead.. Makes all the difference

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

1 pound per gallon is a good starting point. Some people like more rocks, some people prefer more open design. That also doesn't take into account that some rock is much more porous which makes it lighter for the same size. You have a lot of leeway when it comes to how much rock.

Welcome to R2R.

Welcome to R2R. As noted above, a one pound per gallon is a good rule of thumb. That said, some reef keepers are going with a little less rock in order to get a more open and minimalist rock scape. I'm sort of in the middle with about 100 lbs of rock with a total system volume of about 130 gallons.
