Hello everyone,

I have had my Innovative Marine 30L up and running for about 10 months now. I had no prior aquarium experience and I’ve learned a ton in the last 10 months thanks to everyone here.

The plan was to start with something small, see how I enjoyed the hobby then possibly upgrade later. Well now I’m at that point, I’m planning a new tank build which should take place in the next couple of months. I’m going to make a build thread when I start getting the pieces together and wanted to introduce myself before then.

Welcome to R2R! I looked at the IM 30L when I planned my new build. Beautiful aquarium and it looks like you really made yours thrive. Good luck on the AquaMaxx 64!

Thank you! What tank did you end up going with?

Well, I went with the JBJ 30, but it is being replaced by JBJ for a JBJ 45 (long story). The 45 is a couple inches longer all around so its footprint is not much larger than the 30 despite having about 50% more water volume. Generally though there were two reasons I did not go with the IM 30L: (1) after seeing one in person, I felt the display tank width was too narrow for me and (2) with the JBJ I could get away with a single 16” LED fixture.

I wonder, did you find the drain on the IM 30L useful?

I really liked the ratio that the 30l has but it is hard to make a nice display with such a narrow display. I also wanted something a little deeper so I can have a better range of par.
As far as a drain goes, mine doesn’t have one on it. Do the newer ones have a drain for water changes or plumbing in a sump?
The jbj’s are super nice, I was considering getting one but I found someone selling my tank used locally so I snatched it up.

When I was looking at the IM 30L in the autumn, it did come with a drain direct from the tank down into the stand. It was said to make water changes easy, but I felt one may want to siphon in the tank for detritus and hence it may not get used much. I did think despite its small size, one could possibly use it with a sump, simple algae scrubber or chaeto reactor.
