Hey folks

Greetings from the rainy UK :)

I used to keep freshwater fish many years ago. I moved around a lot and got fed up of the almost annual dismantling and moving the tank to a new house and so pretty much gave it away.

I'm stable now so wanted to get back into the hobby and have been itching to try a reef tank.

I've got a 1000L tank being custom built but it's not being delivered until mid November and I couldn't wait, so a few weeks ago I bought a little Fluval Evo 42L to scratch the itch and I figure it could go onto become a coral QT.

I've added an aftermarket filter chamber (floss, purigen & matrix) & Jecod OW-1o powerhead - everything else is stock.

The tank completed cycling about 2 weeks ago, and the initial diatom stage has been and gone. A goby, a clown and some CUC have been added.

I've got a couple of newbie questions if that's ok!

* Is that powerhead too strong for a tank this small (and my little clown who seems to have to work his socks off in the flow) - it's set to minimum speed - which if the manual is to be believed would be 500lph.

* My first fish was an orange spotted goby - from the first minute in the tank, he's been sifting the sand almost non-stop, he has some work ethic! The sand has now piled up in one spot and is now 3 inches deep (up from 1.5). Is that deep enough to be concerned about in terms of any toxic buildup? Don't want to ruin his work unnecessarily :)

* Bearing in mind my new tank should be up and cycled by early December, is it appropriate to put another clown and a blenny in a tank this size?

Thanks!

PS: Excuse the corals - they only arrived yesterday by mail order and they didn't arrive in great shape. They're looking better as the hours pass though.

recommended water turnover is 3-4x total water volume, so powerhead set at the low speed should be fine.

not a concern, can siphon sand during water change to remove detritus buildup.

depends how aggressive the current clown is but given it's small size it should be fine, I'd add a much larger clown to avoid any possible aggression. Ideally a pair of clowns should be introduced simultaneously, 1 larger than the other.
