Hello!!

Hello and WELCOME!

Dont be too rough in yourself. Your local store should have helped a bit more but now you got us :)

As many have said and as you probably did. Just add the bacteria in a bottle it should be ok. Clowns are part of the damsel family and are tough little fish, even thrown into a new tank.
Water changes are good but remember to add more good bacteria with every water change.

If you dont want to wait you could look into products that nullify the ammonia such as prime. This will work to bind the ammonia in the water so it is not harmful to fish. Some here are for the use and some are against. In your situation I wouldnt mind the use of it and the dr. Tim's.

How I your tank and fish today?

Hi! So my testing kit finally arrived and I tested my water, these are the results. Input appreciated.

Ammonia 4
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
PH 8

Tank seems fine I tested the water a little while ago. Clown not eating flakes maybe I should try something else I've never had fw not eat so I'm a bit confused.

Hi,

Don't worry about feeding the clown just yet. I'm sure he's VERY stressed. Your 1st priority is getting the ammonia level down. Right now, feeding is just going to get the ammonia level up.

I am helping you in your other thread. I just happened to run across this one and wanted to try to put your mind at ease about the fish not eating right now.

Welcome!! Clownfish are hardy fish, but 4 is a high! You need to stop adding food into the tank and add more bacteria! Maybe get one piece of live rock, that will help you accelerate the cycling process. Also, you can bring the fish back to the store so they can hold it for you if it’s easier for you. In addition to that FW and SW are different and a little bit more complicated, but don’t feel bad, everyone here have made mistakes when it comes to this hobby. Im going thru the same problem at the moment :)

I called them earlier but I guess they were busy I was put on hold but I'm at work so I'll have to try again tomorrow. I have bacteria and ammonia neutralizer that another member reccomended coming tomorrow though I'm hoping that helps

Welcome to the Dark side of the pond, im sure we have cookies around here somewhere ;) your in good hands here. We can get you going, thriving, and addicted. Keep a close eye on it.

While dry rock is great ( i love billy hay at Florida Dry rock for when i go dry) Everyone is right, it would be best to throw a raw shrimp in to be your bacteria source, but where you have a fish, we will do our best to keep you both happy and healthy :) Keep us posted!

@AngieLikedThat welcome to R2R. I’m a newbie here too and just learning the ropes. I cycled my like how many suggested. Once I got the tank filled I started with Fritzyme Turbostart 900 and then added two clown fish. So far so good!

Like others said, don’t be too hard on yourself. I’ve also learned that there are many “right” answers so figure out the one that works for you and your situation.

Enjoy!

So I went to my local store and the worker advised that I purchase dry rock and cycle with a fish because of possible hitchhikers. He felt it was an easier start for me so I guess I just wanted to share my first fish. I shall name him soon

Cycling with fish is a old practice and is very hard on the fish. In some cases the ammonia that builds up will kill the fish. Ammonia burns to their gill plates is irreversible and if they survive, may shorten their life span.

Ghost feeding a newly established tank, in conjunction with the use of bottle bacteria is the preferred method of cycling a tank. Many hobbyist may disagree with this method and still condone the use of fish to cycle a tank, but it's a very risky practice.

The use of ammonia binders such as prime or amquel will only prolong the cycling process.

It is advisable to return the fish to the LFS till your tank has cycled completely. Any LFS suggesting using fish to cycle would be questionable as for their advise going forward.

Here's some good info:
