May I ask, how do I go about rinsing the sand and rock from the old tank? I’ve never done that before. Do I use tap water or mixed Salt water? Anyway for me to know if it’s rinsed properly?Welcome to the group.
if I may suggest to keep it easy. Pull 20 gallons water and fish from the old tank and put in buckets. Put the old tank water in a 5 gallons bucket to rinse sand in until it is clean. Do same with rock. This way you take all the good stuff and leave the nitrates behind.
Set up new tank and do the water test before anything. Then set it up and put in any additional needed sand and put in the old sand and rock in. Then put in the old water and top off with new mix. I would do a quick acclimation since the clowns may have been out for a bit of time. Hang an ammonia badge just for extra security and then you can add new rock slowly after 2-3 weeks if no spikes.

Howdy
Welcome to R2R. Lots of knowledgable and helpful people here who will support and advise you when needed.Hello all,
I’m new to reef2reef and I am currently working on build my first reef tank. I have had a fish only salt water tank a few years ago, but had to tear it down. I’ll have many questions for sure, so I look forward to the forum.
My first question is regarding the cycle in a new tank. I am going to be inheriting a pair of clownfish from a family member. These Clown fish are paired and about 3-4 years old and have been living in a 30 gal tank with live rock and a few snails. I am setting up a 55 gallon tank currently. If I am going to take the live rock and the clowns, do I need to follow a typical new tank cycle or are they safe to add right away once I have the tank filled with additional water and sand?
How should I handle this move to make it safe for the fish? How would you go about doing this?
I do not have the tank up yet, so I will be starting from scratch.
