Hey everyone, I'm Ryan, from the Chicago suburbs!

I'm a few months into my first reef tank, a 20 gallon standard tank that I built an internal filter for, turning it into a peninsula tank. I've been trying to build my corals slowly (as slowly as my patience will allow), and currently have two Zoa frags, a toadstool leather, an Acan, a GSP, and a mushroom of some sort (I think?). For livestock I've got an O. Clown and a Dottyback, and 5 snails and 5 hermit crabs.

I'm currently dealing with lots of green hair algae, and have started seeing spots of Coraline Algae on my dry rocks. I've been watching my parameters and doing more frequent water changes (at least 10% once per week, usually twice) and cut back my feeding, so I'm hoping the GHA will die down.

Back in college I had a FOWLR tank. I don't think there was much of a nano-reefing community back then (the wisdom of the day was "don't"), so I never ventured out to corals.

I'm hoping to add more corals (open to suggestions), and as I've been researching and checking out all of your great photos I've been second guessing my 'scape. I built it thinking I'd get lots of rock surface for corals, but realize now I've got no islands or sand surface for them. Do I need to open this up a bit more?

I'm glad to join the community, and welcome any suggestions!

Hi Ryan and Welcome!

Glad you joined.

Yes, much has changed but all your prior experiences will help you this time.

When it comes to aquascape, we seem to be changing ours at least a bit at least every few months, if not more signficant changes and more often LOL. You are reminding me I should update our build thread, but in the past month feel there have been two changes so I might not be able to historically capture that information for myself to review later... I love build threads for that data capture reason. Hope you consider creating your own build thread. Plus, when you do and link it to your account, they'll give you a badge (look left, under my ID)

If you want more open space, up to you. But rock scape is based on what you would like to attempt. Plenty of options for a lot of corals you have there.
Kryptonite trumpets are always nice to see. Blastomussa, hammer corals and frogspawns. Since you live near chicago. There's always nice deals on hammers on craigslist.

Welcome to the coral madhouse.
