Hello,

I’m new to the forum culture but have been in this hobby for a few years on and off but you’re always learning no matter how seasoned you are. When I started this hobby I never quarantined anything and to my surprise I’ve done pretty well for starting out and even managed to sustain the hobby through trade which was nice. Then I moved and of course tear down the tank and sell or donate all my live stock that sucked.

New place set up the tank again did the same thing no QT and tried to do every thing I’ve done the same way. I struggled to keep things alive dispute my husbandry and the thing I struggled with the most was bacterial blooms and my fish would die. Could have been my water quality because that’s the one thing that differed was where my water came from. Again had to move to another state and had to tear everything down again.

Bigger tank. New way of doing things. This time I tried my hand in QT. I also tried cycling the tank with ammonia and bacteria. It was awesome! I QT my fish and tank fan great for 6 months and I get my final fish, which were 3 tangs. The place got the from keeps their livestock in copper and use prazi. I made the mistake in trusting that they’ve been treated and although maybe true they were not in treatment Lon enough. Well you can imagine what happened and I lost everything except 3 chromises and my flaco hawkfish.

Tank was fishless for 3 months and my remaining fish where in QT for that time. Once rebooted I started putting fish in again and tank is doing well. I QT EVERYTHING! Fish, coral and inverts. So far so good. My biggest struggle at the moment is hair algae. That stuff will not die fast enough. I’ve finally got my phosphate lowered to where it’s making a difference. Pulled it out almost daily and increased my water changes. I have been dosing phosphat-e to help. At the moment though my phosphates read 0 but I am on the fence on dosing some phosphates while fighting GHA. I have ordered chato for my refugium. I am building a mixed reef and I know I should have some phosphate in there for it to thrive. Any guidance is appreciated.

Welcome to R2R! I don't think I'd recommend dosing phosphate to your tank at this point, based on your description of your journey so far. I'd monitor your phosphate level as it should start to go up from normal feedings. if you have used a fair amount of Phosphat-E it may take a while to see a reading but be patient, as long as you don't start to see signs of dinos.

I’m a huge fan of Foxface for algae control. They are weird creatures that eat greens and can do a great job in getting rid of an unwanted garden ime.

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

Or just keep picking at it and you’ll get the upper hand eventually.
