Hi all

Need some advice. My alk is fairly low 2.4/6.7 and calcium is at 500 high and ph at 8.4. What can I do to increase alk without popping other params? Tank is 440 gallons

Here is a great article to explain how to fix any alkalinity or calcium problem.

Use Baking Soda to raise your ALK, but only do it a little at a time, as this will also raise your PH. Only a few table spoons will raise it pretty good, so just go a few at a time, depending on how low it is. Leave alone for 24hours, and the PH will stabilize itself, with the correct aeration of the tank.

Baking soda will actually depress pH due to the "extra" co2 molecules it brings to the tank. Baked baking soda (washing soda) lacks this co2 and will raise pH as some of the co2 in the tank will be removed from solution to bind with it. If you dose slowly via dripper or doser you might not see the short term effects, which is good.

Of course both will have a raising and stabilizing effect on pH as well as Alk in the long run.

Just wondering about your test results. What test kits are you using? Can you have some one else verify them?
