I'm 10 days into a new set up. Ammonia level is on the down hill side and I've just dicovered the 3rd dead muscle in 4 days. The first two came away from live rock with no problem. This third one however is imbedded on one side to a softball sized rock that I'm desperate to keep. Does anyone know if I can successfully clean out the decaying part and save a really nice piece ...?

Theres no reason to remove them. The critters in the rock will take care of it.

Did you add these to your tank? If so The tank is not ready for live stock. Make sure the tank is fully cycled before you do.

not knowing what size/type of muscles we are talking about makes it hard to assess the urgency of removing the tissue. If they are large, use tweezers to remove what you can. If they are small it will be dealt with in the natural cycling course, and you should just remove those that come away easily.

This is two of the good ones. They are all about the size of a large egg...
