I just used this youtube video to make a aiptasia killer.....not sure if im allowed to post links but idc atm stuff in my tank is in serious trouble Home Made Aiptasia Executioner Killer - YouTube
My device is exactly like this one....almost to the letter. I killed two aiptasia with ease, sucked them out using a turkey baster.

Five minutes later EVERY coral in my system is shriveled up...to the maximum.
My mushrooms are spewing out white stuff and Duncan is all closed up, my zoas are closed. My leopard wrasse dove in the sand about the same time this happened and the only thing not affected by the entire process is my possum wrasse. Before this event my chemistry was fine, nothing had gone wrong in my tank since I got it. Can anyone give me any idea why this has happened?

The only reasonable conclusion i have come to is the release of copper ions into the solution of my tank, but it was in my tank for such a small amount of time i didn't think it would matter....was I wrong?
I don't have a test kit and LFS are closed till Wednesday. Any info would be appreciated and if its something obvious please be nice, im freaking out. I am doing an aggressive water change right now, thats the only thing i can think to do?

I donno but purposefully putting voltage into my water isn't something I am going to do. I had a stray voltage issue from a broken heater earlier this year. It was horrible. Its just not a good idea I don't think to use something like this.. Peppermint shrimp are cheap and effective and can be removed once they have done their job.

Large water changes for a bit to remove the toxins your corals are likely spewing into the water is all you can do for now. Other than that it is going to take time to see if it killed everything or not.

yeah it is copper wire but i didnt think it would mess it up as much as it did. I only had the wire in there for a maximum of 2 minutes. I did 10 gallons of water change im going to continue to do watewr changes tonight...i think i killed everything.

I thought about that too but people use aiptasia x all the time and they dont give off anything? anyone else have thoughts about the chemicals coming off the dead anemones, i killed 2 big ones.

i have done 10 gallons and im doing another 10 right now, so thats 20 total tonight in a 55 gallon, should i do more?

i basically cant do anything but water changes atm...i have idonie solution and salt at my disposal. LFS are closed and will be for two days.

Well the real ones don't use copper wire. When you zap them it does make some chlorine, but should not be that much. Copper, saltwater and electricity makes hydrogen and chlorine. If you only zapped one or two it should not have caused a reaction, but I would not ever put copper in my tank. I had a tank crash from a penny before. What voltage do you have it running

12v, i was using a transformer...this might sound ridiculous but i put the sucker on my tounge to make sure the transformer was working (yes i know th eimplications of this) and the transformer is working fine. I was running 12v..i guess copper was the culprit?

So an update for those of you who tried to help which i appreciate greatly.

I did immense amounts of water changes, the leopard wrasse came back out of the sand, the possum wrasse looks good. The corals on the other hand is a different story....

Some of my corals are mutated or got hurt? The color in them has changed...significantly. My Japanese fire flies (LFS) called them this, changes from a red skirt to a nuclear orange color. My green bay packers look green/white..very pale. My radioactive dragon eye look okay for the most part..little pale but mostly the same. My frogspawn took the biggest hit..it looks shriveled even after all this time and looks overall much darker in appearance...it looks like its on the rebound though. My Acan looks amazing, it was not affected at all and is continuing to grow. My star polyps are out and about but seem like the green tentacles are shorter in length. My Duncan seems fine as well..no change. My meteor shower is slowly but surely dying at least in my opinion the blue color is flaking off little by little although the polyps are open. We will see what happens there. The biggest question i have is my watermelon zoas....they changed color BIG TIME. From the normal green skirt and red inside to a bright yellow skirt and pale red inside. I have assumed the copper was the reason for this change in color although nothing seems like its going to actually die. Anyone know if the color in the zoas or other corals will change back to the original color or continue to grow these colors? Will the new polyps grow normal colors or this changed color? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

It's hard to say exactly what compounds were released by the copper wire oxidizing in your water, but odds are you put some pretty toxic stuff in there. The aggressive water changes saved your animals from certain death, and you should continue those for a few more days. Did you say you are running carbon? If not, get some GAC in there right away - you need to get the metals and impurities out.

Oh, and post some strong feedback to the moron who put that design up on you tube...

Copper + Corals = Certain Death...

I have personally seen a tank that was killed from a copper penny being in the sump for a couple days. Pennies are copper and nickel to make the cost to manufacture cheaper. That wire is a much larger percent copper and when running electricity through it will oxidize it even faster. You should never, ever put anything copper in the tank for any reason ever... The real zappers use titanium probes and sealed wires.

Now the water changes will help slow things down or reduce the amount of copper. The best thing to do right now is to run GAC and a polyfilter. I keep polyfilters on hand all the time for emergencies like this. I haven't had to use them for something obvious, but I have added them to the sump when something looks odd and I want to verify there are no contaminants.

really? you pluged in a wire and held it in your tank! WOW! ive seen it all (now)

I wouldnt think it is the copper wire, it was only in the tank for a min or two right? I would say it was the stray voltage! or the grease the use around the wire
