I know this is a saltwater aquarium desscution but I have a beta fish that does not look good. This morning when I turn the lights on in my room the beta fish was swimming like crazy and it seem like he was having a panic attack. Now he’s on the floor of my tank breathing heavily and does not look great. What should I do?

Well he is now at the top. Was at the bottom but I moved the tank to get a better pic and he swam to the top. His fins don’t look good

What is your ph in this tank and what is water temp
I have had this beta for over a year and has done so well. This past week he has been acting weird so I did a water change. I do not test anything for this tank and I do. It have a heater.

Depending on tank size and the type of water used how often you did water changes and diet if you had it over a year it’s probably getting old

tank is 2.2 gallons. I use the tap water and put water conditioner to treat the tap water. I water change it every month or so. I am feeding it bug bites

How much conditioner did you use, if I remember correctly, if to much prime is used it lowers the o2 in the water. I'm not sure if that is correct, but I remember something like that.

I put 22 drops witch is the right amount for 2.2 gallons

Tap water is one of the biggest enemies for betta and often has higher ph, chlorine, metals and other elements that are deemed harmful
Age is also a factor as they have an average span of 2-2.5 years. Adding banana leaf often helps their water quality. Water temp often a hidden enemy also

I don’t think it would be water temp. I did the same water change routine. Maybe age. Idk why he is laying on the bottom of the tank

That tank is WAY to small for a betta to live healthily. I would HIGHLY recommend you get a 5 gallon or more tank if you want a happy fish. I have mine in a 10 gallon with some plans and it is so happy and healthy so that is the first thing I would do.

What’s his ammonia/nitrite/nitrate? Temp? He could have gotten spooked by the lights turning on which explains the shooting about then heavy breathing

Ok I will ppl into getting a bigger tank. I have been mainly focusing on my saltwater tank and don’t have a lot of money left.

Idk what the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate are, I don’t have test kits for freshwater. I never test the water of that tank because he has always been fine. I also have been putting all of my money towards my saltwater tank so I can’t buy and more test kits. Temp is fine. Maybe the lights shocked him but that does not explain why he is on the floor looking dead

Just got home and found him like this. He also looks more fat than usual.

I find with betta that u get form lfs they don't have a fantastic lifespan mine all lasted just over a Yr old and I found that they are very sensitive to water changes so I added more live plants and just watched parameters if I saw a increase then a small water change and then used a airline to replace water slowly over time

By this photo he has pretty bad fin rot. You need to be doing weekly 50% waterchanges on a smaller tank. He can thrive in the 2 gallon easily as long as you change his water. If he’s bloated, fast him a few days. If he’s pineconing, (I can’t tell by photo, but it does seem so by his dorsal line.) then you need to start salt baths with Epsom salt. Chances of survival from pineconing is slim but not zero. You’ll have to look up salt baths. But really you need a test kit to know his levels. Especially in a smaller tank. Fwiw some test kits can be used in fresh too….

Ok I sounds like he may not make it. I think he is pineconing because his scales are flared away from his body. I don’t have the supply’s to give him baths and test water. What is the best way to put him down humanly?
