I have had my 36g tank setup for over a year and it’s heavily stocked with corals. The tank had had its downs past few weeks with algae and alk problems. I’m about to start ordering test kits and etc and start trying to get my reef tank on the right path. Atm the only filter on my tank is a small hob. I’m wanting to add a sump to my setup and gradually upgrade the sump as I can.

The question is will the overflow in the picture work ok for my 36g said it’s 200gph maybe add a u valve
Can I build a 10g sump and add a 3 compartment storage container to filter through to start off with till I can build proper sump and put the return pump in a container with holes drilled in it. Maybe sponge to stop air bubbles
May build my own protein skimmer

Just be ware that those overflows are prone to failing after a time due to air bubbles building up and stopping the siphon. As for the overflow being large enough, thats up to you. What kind of flow do you want to run through your sump? 2x, 5x, or even something like 10x? If you are only aiming for 2-5x that overlfow should be just fine if its rated for 300gph.

A 10 gallon aquarium is quite on the small side as far as fitting equipment that is useful to you. Petco currently has $1 per gallon sale going on and you could pick up a 20 Gallon aquarium for $20 which will suite your needs just fine for now and future equipment for your size of a tank.
