Can someone please tell me of a good camera to buy. And explain to me how to pick a lens. Can you just buy the camera and use the lens on it or do you need a better one?

First what's your budget and what do you want to take pics of?

Start with the stickies here, and then decide if you want a DSLR or a point and shoot camera.

Photography is a whole 'nother hobby and is just as if not more expensive then your Reef tank, plus it requires some skill, unfortunately not everyone can be a master. ;)

I can second the expense part. I bought my first DSLR used and put about $800 in it, sold it for $500. Bought a pro body for about $3k. Then I found out how much glass factored in to sports images. Three L lenses later and my camera equipment is worth more than my car... and now it's old and outdated. The lenses hold their value, but I'm at least two versions behind on the body. Maybe when my lottery investment pays off.... *sigh*

Better to have great glass on a cheaper camera than cheap glass on an expensive camera.

I hear you... I only wish I'd heard it 5 years ago.

I had a 50 1.8, a 70-300 5.6 and a 400 5.6.

I ended up with a 28-70 2.8L, a 70-200 2.8L and a 300 2.8L

I'd love to add a 400 and a few primes for basketball and volleyball, but I don't shoot as much as I did a few years back. Besides the 1D body is fast, but doesn't have the resolution that some of the newer bodies do... I could go with a used 1DS, but I'd hate to give up the shutter speed now.

I just want a good camera to tke better pics. I don't want a crazy expensive camera. I want to be able to take close up of my coral. What do you guys think

I'd probably look for a Macro lens if I was intending to do mostly corals/fish. As for a body, the way I chose my camera was to go and shoot with some friends. I met a local guy on www.fredmiranda.com who had a couple of bodies and many lenses. I figured out what I'd need with his stuff... then didn't listen and bought lenses by what I "thought" I needed.

If you plan to do more than shoot your aquarium, Miranda's site is a great resource for that as well. Lots of talented photographers, lots of reviews, and from about every perspective.

From my perspective... I hate shutter lag, that's why I went with a pro body.
