I have had this fox face for three weeks now and two days ago this spot appeared on its tail. It has always been a great eater, however yesterday I noticed it's eyes were cloudy and it was swimming around almost aimlessly like it was blind (it's not just acting that way), and it would not eat any food. It usually sleeps with its fins up and changes color to a molted look, but last night it just floated around in the tank. I have no experience with fish disease and was hoping someone might be able to identify what's troubling this little guy. Thanks in advance for the help.

The tail looks like an infection -- cloudy eyes are somewhat endemic to foxface but i would like to see a photo or two just of the eyes to be sure it is not flukes, ich, or velvet.

Is the fish breathing heavily?

For the infection, source acrriflavin and perform a bath, and I would source Furan 2, Metroplex, and Kanaplex for a wide range of effectiveness against whatever it is.

I would act fast as it takes several days for infections to begin to be reversed in fish.

You'll need a quarantine tank with an ammonia alert badge (seachem product) to treat the fish in.

+1

Infections cure slowly, but can move aggressively. Once he goes into those antibiotics (follow the directions on the individual labels for each product), you'll want to treat for at least ten days.

Thank you for the response. I cannot get a good pic of the eyes right now, however, they are not super cloudy, just a little hazy.

And yes, it is breathing heavily.

Just to clarify, you would treat with all three of these at once, Furan 2, Metroplex, and Kanaplex, or just one of them? I will have to get a quarantine tank, will a five gallon tank work or should it be bigger? I will try to start treatments today if I can find all of the medicine.

Do you have any other fish in the tank with him? If not, check the water quality of the water.
What was the quarantine procedure done?
Also I suggest to perform a 5 min FW dip on him, it will relief him and hopefully slow his breathing rate and you can check for fluke that way.
And yes for severe infections its advised to dose all three antibiotics together (Furan2, Metroplex, and kanaplex).
5 gallon is too small for him, if you dont have any other tank add him to the 5 gallon to start treatment ASAP but consider to get bigger tank as soon as possible.
Also observe him really closely for any spots you can see, or any other symptoms.

Hope he gets well soon and best of luck.

Yes, all three together. Keep us posted!

Well, I bought a quarantine tank and did an acrriflavin bath right away, then I started Furan2, Metroplex, (I could not find the other one). By Saturday evening its breathing had slowed some, however he passed Sunday evening. Whatever hit him took him fast. It was within a matter of three-four days. Everything else in the main display looks fine thought. Hate losing fish like that. Thanks for all the advise though. At least I tried.

I'm sorry for your loss, Joe . . . It hurts when you work for one and lose it, but it's a better kind of pain (is that possible?!) than knowing you didn't do what you could.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Unfortunately infections that strong cannot all be "saved".

Great job trying, sorry again for your loss!
