I am just starting my first tank build. After perfectly curing dry pukani rock for over a month and setting up my tank to start the cycling process I felt I didn't have enough rock in my tank so on a whim I bought live rock from a great LFS. I put the live rock in my tank completely forgetting the reason why I cured the dry pukani in the first place. To prevent unwanted algae and hitch hikers. Did I just screw up?!

I'd think You will get some algae regardless. Also I figure the live rock will help the cycle & introduce more "different " good bacteria. Let's see what the experts say. This is a good question.

Nope just introduced more diversity to your tank. You probably introduced more good then possible bad. Even if there were any unwanted stuff living on the rock its all part of the experience and unavoidable in my opinion. Hitchhickers come on everthing you add to your tank. Just find a good lfs and closely look at everything before you add to your tank or qt everything.

Well you did just expose yourself to hitchhikers. But I think that's not all bad. Don't sweat it and enjoy the ride because your more likely to get the biodiversity your new tank needs than something you'll battle. At least that's been this noob's experience.

Pull it out and inspect
This is coraline algea on all of the rocks but one in particular has I guess what you would call hair algea. Also so visable sponges.

Thank you all for the reassurance. I'll let it ride like most of you have said. I'll keep you all updated!!

You'll be fine. Hair algae exists in natural reefs. I need to get a bumper sticker "Algae Happens" haha! Extra biodiversity is a winner all day, every day. + if you happen to get one of those unfortunate hitch hikers it adds to the experience. You learn more about your tanks balance, what it can handle, and how to handle "problems". Risky rocks for the WIN! If you can't live life on the edge, where is the excitement? :)

It will give you a very good excuse to buy more fish :D to counter any critters, plant life, etc. that may surprise you. Cheers!
