Help! Dusty water in reef tank

Hi All,

I have a tremendous amount of flow 80-100x and also an overkill filter.

I’m running filter floss in one media basket, the other has Phosban.

No matter what, my water looks dusty: https://imgur.com/a/KUnenu5

What is the cause of this? I’m worried it’s my sand bed. I use Fiji pink. The picture your seeing is of the water after all pumps have been shut down for a half hour.

I’m dosing two part via DOS very slowly into my return chamber, so I don’t think it’s precipitate.

I’m going to do a 70% water change this week.

Would adding more filter floss in second chamber help?

There’s always something in the water column of a reef tank. I wouldn’t worry about it. Food, detritus, micro bubbles, you name it...and yes household dust too. All harmless for the most part. Can’t see anything unusual in your pic

It’s more annoying than concerning. I don’t want this look for my reef.

Is this the consequence of having an open top tank?

Do you have any fish or inverts that sift the sand or burrow in it? I have a ten gallon and when my single Nassarius snail comes out for a stroll there is sand in the water, same for when my pistol shrimp remodels etc

I agree with this. If i get close to my tank theres always something in my tank thats floating around. Maybe its the food floating if your fish don't eat it all.

You could try a 50 micron polishing pad but you’ll have to be diligent about changing/cleaning it because it will clog unbelievably fast. I only use one every so often when my water gets to the point that it’s on my nerves. If I don’t remove it in about 24 hours it will slow the return out of my display and send my skimmer into orbit.

Probably not the only reason but they could be contributing if they hunt in the sand?
