1st, get some fresh saltwater cooking.
2nd, get a big bag of carbon and put it in the sump nearest the return inlet (don't suck it in the pump
3rd, get the dead animals out.
4th.. get that water changes up and going
5th post up "within range parameters" and give us some more details about the tank. How old, etc..

I’d be prepaid to pull rocks and put em in buckets with the rest of the livestock.

Nothing normal smells like clorine

Like @saltyfilmfolks said, nothing g natural smells like Cholorine. Do you have an auto top off that could have Cholorine in the water? Add some new salt water and forget to decholorinate?

Update to this story . A little late but finally got the time to get back here. All my live stock except for my emrald and hermits passed. My corals were touch and go for a while but after countless water changes and test they came back to life. Almost gave up after that ordeal .

Any further ideas what caused it?

yea, my limited experience would push to finding the cause so it does not happen again, but great news that you are back up and running and it is looking good. I soo want to get a blue mandarin but am really trying to wait until my tank is 1 year old to sustain him, do you feed your mandarin anything special?

any idea what it was? maybe a busted heater?
busted heater wouldn't made it smell like chlorine, might've be some chlorine that was in the air, or in the water of a waterchange / auto top-off.

He is doing really well . There is a pretty good size pod population in my tank. I knew I wanted one so I seeded it early. I'll usually buy some and add them once a week too. Just because he is always eating none stop lol. Fish store said he would eat frozen food but I knew that was bs.

I did find out what it was . My gfs roommate wash doing laundry. She put the bleach on top of the glass lids of the tank she bumped it and some fell in. She didn't fess up until much later about it. Needless to say I kicked her out shortly after.

that's the worst! i had a friend's girlfriend plug a space heater into same outlets as my tank and it overloaded the breaker and i wasn't home until the following day... tank was down in the 60's but everything recovered
