I think it would suffice but I would recommend getting better biological media than bio balls. They might even be too large for it. You don't have to have a sump. But here's the problem. It's pushing out 265gph going up to your tank. The higher it pushes the harder it's going to be for it to get to that 265gph when it comes to the end of the return. So in theory your flow rate in your return will definitely go down to maybe even around 200gph or even less all depends on how high it has to push. So let's say you do get a sump that's extra money but you won't have to worry about the pressure it has to push because it will just go in the sump. But if you get a stronger canister filter one with more pressure and flow you won't have to run into that problem. You know? I can be wrong but it's a totally understandable theory. I've had a two canister filters and I've never had that problem mainly due to them both being higher quality pumps but maybe yours might work who knows? It's worth a shot.
