My Gem Tang got into it with another fish last night and has extensive damage to his dorsal fin. Surprisingly he seems fine, is eating and all, presently.

I have him separated now, and need best recommendation to treat this in QT. I have everything under the sun medication wise. I'm thinking Stress Coat, Malachite Green, maybe some Kanaplex.

Thanks all.

Going to go with Furan 2 and Stress Coat in the water, and time. This will probably take 2-3 months to heal. Hoping for a full recovery.

I wouldn't treat him with anything. I would just separate and feed the gem tang a good diet so it will heal. I would save the medicine for now. No reason to further stress the fish out.

What you need to figure out is how to deal with the territorial issues before adding the gem tang back into the tank. Otherwise this will happen again.

Consider dosing the QT with Ruby Reef Rally. It's very gentle on fish and it has both antibiotic and antiseptic qualities. Good high quality foods with the addition of Selcon or other vitamins. For the first step. Watch the bite areas for a white-ish film or redness developing. If that happens, I highly recommend NFG. It works great on tangs. It's a bit hard to find, but a worthy addition to your med kit. The trifecta of Kanaplex + Furan2 + Metro works extremely well, but NFG works a bit faster.

Wow, that guy got beat. Expensive beating. Hope he makes it!

NFG came today. still waiting on Ruby Reef. Had to order both on eBay. Pic is today after being in QT alone for week with no meds. He's doing well, and eating OK. Eats Noro daily and food soaked in Selcon/garlic. Healing has begun, I did notice him twitching his dorsal fin a bit, probably itches a little from the healing.
There was a bit of whitish on the healed part, although to be honest I can't tell if that white spots trying to reform, anyway so I dosed NFG at 1/4 tsp in 30 gallon QT and will repeat for the next 3 days (instructions are 1/4 tspn per 20 gallons)

unfortunately I think this may not completely heal and will scare over at some point.

Did his dorsal fin grow back completely?

Yes he completely recovered. It took 7 weeks. Can not even tell it happened.
Thanks! I have a gem who was beat up for a day, and his dorsal fin took the most damage, including the spines. just wondering how long it took, and you answered that for me!
