My initial thought was a purple sponge as it had a cylindrical tube sticking out for moving water maybe. Then today it seems to have grown a little and has a bunch of long spikes sticking out of it. It’s been growing on the side of a toadstool I glued down in low to moderate flow and in the shade. This was my first piece of coral so I’m guessing it hitchhiked from my LFS tank.

I noticed it about two months ago or less and it’s grown to about the size of a quarter and seems to want to wrap around. Is this just a purple sponge or does it look like something else?

Thanks!

Sponge.

Thanks for your answers, so that’s confirmed. Only thing that made me second guess it today was those spikes coming out of it I’d never seen!

Yup a sponge and that piece looks like a hammer coral.

It looks like a hammer/frogspawn hybrid they sold me as a hammer. The polyps are a mix of round mostly and some hammer shapes. Here’s a better pic
