I started this ten-gallon up as I await my 100-gallon to be delivered within the next two months due to backorder. I cycled the system with an 8”x8”x1” MarinePure plate and a 4oz bottle of FritzZyme TurboStart 900. Everything was fine before and after I added my pair of clownfish and some corals. I noticed algae and diatoms starting to grow, and I picked up two Trochus snails. I haven’t been able to get rid of nitrites since then.

I am wondering if it could be due to the amount of waste that the snails are producing; it was unbelievable at first, and I couldn’t figure out where all of the detritus was coming from. The filter floss in the overflow is brown within two days. There is a monstrous pile of snail waste in a corner of the tank, and it stir it daily to try to force some of it into the filter floss. Usually, after I stir it, the corals exhibit a feeding response.

I’ve attempted two five-gallon water-changes within the last two days because my nitrites were between 0.5 and 1.0, which caused me to add Prime for detoxification. I have also cut back on feeding the clownfish to every other day. Should I add more bacteria to help out the current population? Should I perform daily water-changes until nitrites are back at zero? Should I continue dosing detoxifiers?

All of the corals and the two clownfish look happy; nothing appears to be stressed. I don’t have any diatoms or other algae taking hold anywhere. I’m just unsure of what I should be doing to get my parameters back to acceptable levels.

A week or two of stir (and or siphon ) and then water changes. Then bacteria. You want to look at ammonia when you stir and when considering the source of the problem.

With the no3 high , you know the bacteria is probably fine and doing it’s job.
A lot of soft corals def won’t mind the high numbers fwiw.
Go slow , no stress.

Those must be some big snails. Lol.

I think that the appropriate dose of Seachem “Prime” will detoxify the nitrite if you are concerned about this. Will not remove it but relieve any neg. effects.
