I think one of my fish has ich and I need to quarantine but I don't have the equipment right now. What do I need to get to start treating it?

You need a quarantine tank, heater, hang on the back filter, a couple pieces of PVC pipe for the fish to have a place to hide and decide if you'll do a copper or hyposalinity treatment.

Do not treat the display tank!

20g tank, hang on the back filter, some kind of bacteria like a old sponge from your tank or bacteria in a bottle, and some Cupramine, !4 days treatment plus 30 more on observation/Quarantine and you will be ok. Lesson learn, quarantine all your fish!!!!!! is cheaper than trying to fix or save any fish!!!

If I don't have a sponge in the tank what do I do for bacteria?

Don't worry about it, the pad in the hang on filter, and the glass in the tank will take care of bacteria. The whole purpose of the quarantine tank is to get rid of the disease, it's never going to cycle like a regular tank. You going to paid attention to the parameters closely and even make more water changes because the lack of bacteria filtration, but it's worth it.

You can do a water change in the main tank and fill or partially fill the QT with the discarded water.

Your biggest concern in your QT is going to be ammonia. Start testing for ammonia regularly after day 2.

Your biological filtration will no benefit much in your QT.
