i bought a few frags a couple of years back and thought they did not survive. Then randomly several pieces like this one pop up on a piece of live rock.. can anyone help me ID this coral? Or is this some sort of hitchhiker?

Of course! :( What should I do/should I get rid of them?

There are many options to try to get rid of aptasia from manual removal, injectables, and berghia nudibranch. There's a sponsor here (Frank's tanks) that has some positive reviews for aptasia removal.

AiptasiaX works very well for me to kill aiptasia. Alternatively, you can make them retract into their hole/crevice and then gel superglue over them

Are they harmful to the tank/is there an issue with leaving them in there? Or will they start to take over if I don't get rid of them now?

they can take over a tank. They can sting coral and kill them. Im not sure about eating fish but I'm sure they would given a chance

As sfin52 pointed out, they annoy everything in the tank and spread far and wide pretty quickly. Take care of them ASAP.

if the rock can be removed for a bit take it out for a Hydrogen peroxide wash
