Hi reefers!

I am currently trying to identify this coral. Its a 2 month-old addition to my tank. Got it from a reefer that quit the hobby, but she could not identify the coral for me.

I believe it a favite of some kind, its growing on the skeleton of a past acro coral that I have to get rid of ASAP as, in my newb mistake, I put in my tank whole (and GHA and vermetid snails started growing on it).

I want to frag it and get a super cleanup of the rock/skeleton piece underneath.

Thanks.

Wow, thanks guys. That was quick.

So I will need to find a way to frag these. They are very close together.
You will need a wet bandsaw/ coral saw to frag it. And be careful, cutting through a polyp can kill it and potentially lead to an infection of the rest of the coral.

I’m not seeing the old acro skeleton that you are referring to....
why do you think you need to cut the coral up? It looks perfectly healthy in those pics

Yes. I don't WANT to, but unfortunately it is growing on a piece of rock that is growing GHA. There is no GHA in the rest of the tank. I want to avoid an uncontrolled spread. The GHA is growing out of the very tiny pores in the rock/skeleton of the acro and are impossible to pluck out. I would need a better picture to show you the shape of the rock. Fortunately, my parameters (very low P and N - undetectable by red sea pro test), prevents further spread.... for now.

You shouldn’t be cutting corals to avoid a tiny bit of algae.
If it really bothers you that much (a little algae in a reef is normal, ever been snorkeling?) try using a toothbrush to scrub the algae off the rocks that way you don’t risk accidentally killing the coral

Thanks. After thinking about it, you are right. My priority remains to avoid killing the coral.

I will continue looking into how I can solution this. Thanks for the help!
