Just starting to put some fish in my tank. Picked up 3 Vanderbilt Chromis' (special order) from my LFS. They arrived to his place same day (according to the owner were only in the bags a few hours) placed in his tanks and I picked them up the following morning. After drip acclimating them I transferred them into my QT and one seemed to be a little off. I know they had a hard time catching one of them from the tank when I went to pick them up but I don't know which one it was so I thought maybe it might have just been stress. Long story short I have been observing them all for the last few days. The one in question has not eaten unless I just haven't seen it. This morning one of the ones that was swimming and eating fine is dead with what looked like a sore on it's side. This one is now showing what you see in the photos. I looked into some of the more common fish diseases posted here but I wasn't able to make any of them fit perfectly.....any thoughts?

plans are to start prazipro treatment today with a second next week followed by copper a week later, just wanted to know if I should hit the QT with something else first.

All QT parameters look pretty good Ammonia may be slightly elevated (between .0 and .2 on a Red Sea test kit) everything else tests normal

Any labored or rapid breathing? Hiding? Nosing into powerhead flow?

Yes, rapid breathing. Has mostly been hanging out at the top of the tank near the inlet nozzles. Just checked on it and the scales are substantially looking worse just from a few hours ago when I took the pictures. Looking much like the one I lost overnight now.:(

Can I run Metronidazole with Prazipro? or is it going to be too late for this little guy?

Update.... looks like this one will not make it. I will be picking up some Metronidazole right now in an effort to save the last one (looks healthy so far) and for any future Vanderbuilts that I try. @Humblefish does that seem right for a fish with uronema to decline that fast?

Due to his current condition, I would do the following:
  1. Abandon Prazipro treatment for now (treating for Uronema takes precedence here).
  2. Give all fish a 45 min formalin bath to provide immediate relief: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/formalin.290925/
  3. Treat with metro in the QT: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/metronidazole.298762/
For #3, post formalin bath it would be optimal to transfer the fish into a new/sterile QT to prevent reinfection.

Update for today.

FW dipped the chromis last night. Added metroplex to the QT last night as well. Today the chromis is showing some of the scale issue that the other 2 had however it is swimming around just fine and doesn’t seem to be breathing heavily. It did take some food that I soaked in metro last night but I didn’t have the focus available for binding. I did order some and hope to see it soon. I need to do a water change tonight or early tomorrow due to slightly elevated ammonia then I’ll do another round of metroplex. Here’s hoping!!!

Sad to report that the last vanderbilt didn't make it through the night (which is seriously a bummer because it was looking pretty good last night when I checked on it). The Wrasse and the Powder Blue are still looking good. I did find whatever is in the following pic in the QT when I pulled the little guy out.. wasn't sure if its some type of worm or if its the "white stringy poo" thats mentioned in the treatment posts. Either way it doesn't move on it's own accord. Feeling pretty discouraged right about now with the loss or possible killing of 4 fish.... What happened to the days we could buy fish and drop them in our display tanks and hardly anything ever died. :(

ID on the photo would be cool if anyone has input

Sorry for your loss :(

Uronema is a very difficult disease to treat. You almost have to treat for it prophylactically to have any chance. If that white thing was evidence of internal parasites, the odds were stacked against him just that much more.
