Help ID please

This “stuff” started growing on my rocks about 2 months ago. I thought it was some sort or algae, so I wasn’t too worried but it has since started spreading out where the light hits my rocks the most. It’s a light brown/yellow color and has a spongy feel. I can rip it off pretty easily in dime size chunks but will grow back in a week. Any ideas? Iv’e tried researching on my own with no luck.

I agree that it's some kind of algae, but that way more of an educated guess than an ID. And just what kind of algae it is, I have no idea. Hopefully others will be able to give a solid ID.

I'm not totally convinced it's not actually sponge... following...

Sure looks like a sponge but I’ve never seen one grow as such in a non shaded area. Nor have I seen an algae that looks so sponge-like. Hmm...
