Help ID this Coral

Hi all,

I am new to this hobby and would greatly appreciate your help / advise / guidance; when progressing.

I got this guy free from a friend and would really like to know its name (kind), how to place it, care for it and all that I need to know. Also note that it has some damages to it. Should I worry? What needs done?

BTW I found out that this is a sponge. Now I have a new problem. This fellow has holes (something has eaten into it). Will it recover? What should I do?
