Help ID this guy please! Friendly or Pesky?

It is most likely aiptasia, a nasty pest. You should remove it if possible before it spreads.

In a stroke of luck that rock is the only small detached piece of the aquascape

First one I have seen and I observe my tank closely each day. It is also very small, about the size of a pea.

Yes Aiptasia, i would remove rock if possible, I wouldn't attempt removal of it inside aquarium

There are different wild anemones you might have if you have real LR but more than likely that’s the pest type of Aiptasia… Glass Aiptasia. If you have real Gulf LR you might have an anemone that’s not invasive….

Take a screw driver and hammer and chip the rock below it so it comes off with a piece of rock and you’re done.

I actually think the flow dynamics are better in my tank without that obstruction running through the front, so I think I’ll just keep it out.

my tomini isn’t gonna be thrilled about it though.. ‍

Just keep an eye out for others, I have only had one in my aquriam that came on a new frag (I cut it off completely without damaging Aiptasia), hopefully this is only one you have
I'm unsure.... would it die if you left rock out for a few weeks??

I will be diligently watching for other pesky invaders! Hoping I was lucky enough to catch it before it grabs a hold

If you’re aren’t putting the rock back in right away give it a peroxide bath…
