Nope they are good, feed off silicates same as diatoms, they can get out of hand ime if you have high silicates. But anything to help get rid of brown sand is a good thing in my book lol. Just an FYI I've had them get about an inch long and nearly as thick as a marble.

They are dependent on silica levels in your tank,they should be self limiting, but if you have high silica levels in your tank (usually by not using ro/di) they may keep coming up. althou they are harmless.
